The Winooski Block is a centerpiece of the city's downtown core. But in the 1970s, city planners wanted to tear it down as part of an urban renewal project. The son of the building's owner, Russell Niquette Jr. helped save the building with Historic Preservation Grant funding from the Federal Government, and the Italianate building has since been restored to its former glory.
