Stephen Douglas was born in this house in 1813 and learned the trade of cabinetmaking in the area. He moved to Illinois, though lacking education, became a lawyer and politician. A very famous senator, he famously ran against Abraham Lincoln. He believed in States' Rights, including the right to own slaves.
