After World War II, the U.S. Army developed thousands of Quonset Huts- utilitarian, cheap housing buildings made of corrugated iron, that could be put up and taken down in a hurry by unskilled labor. Though they used to be plentiful throughout Vermont, most have been taken down. In Hardwick, residents purchased a Quonset Hut for $8,000 and it once served as a town garage.
