Admiral George Dewey of Montpelier, Part 2
After the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898, Montpelier native George Dewey became one of the most famous individuals in the United States. Eventually promoted to Admiral of the Navy, a rank that had never been used before or since, he went on a nation-wide tour of the country before returning home to Vermont, where 40,000 people came out to see him in downtown Montpelier. The state named a day in his honor, and while he had aspirations to run for office, his remarks prevented him from politics.
