Shard Villa was built by Columbus Smith, a fairly notable lawyer specializing in English inheritance cases. His European travels influenced the style of the house, featuring fresco, sculpture, and other extravagant artwork. The house was given upon his death to be used for the housing and care of the elderly of the area.
