History in the 252

VHS will be celebrating Local History with an exhibit in the Card Room at the State House on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. As part of that display, we are undertaking a “History in the 252” project to highlight a “nugget” of history from each municipality in Vermont (bonus Gore content possible). We’d like to invite local historical societies & museums around the state to share a story from their town to build a full picture of the robust, diverse, and unique history that is found and preserved in every corner of Vermont.

This is your opportunity to help show decision-makers in Montpelier the depth, breadth, and diversity of local history work. The complete project will be available here online. Select towns will have their stories highlighted in the display on April 5. Submit your town’s highlight by March 15, 2023 to ensure inclusion.

Submissions can be made at https://form.jotform.com/230095812445050

Submission Guidelines

  • Stories for each town can highlight any number of historical things- an event, person, business, collections item, unique feature, etc. and can be from any time period.
  • Submissions are limited to 1,000 characters. Entries may be edited for clarity and consistency. We will rely on the submitter to ensure their entry is historically accurate.
  • Please include 1-2 digital images that help illustrate your story. Images at a minimum of 1MB are preferred.
  • The project is meant to help highlight local historical societies & museums, so while individuals may submit items, we encourage LHS efforts for the towns they represent. If more than one entry is submitted for a town, VHS will choose the entry to use.

Sample entries can be found below. If you have any questions, contact Eileen Corcoran, eileen.corcoran@vermonthistory.org, (802) 479-8522.
