Federal funding and Vermont Historical Society

We have heard from many of you who are concerned about the shift in federal funding priorities. We, too, are concerned. As of this writing, what we know is that the current administration is severely curtailing future funding for museums, libraries, and the humanities. That means us.
The Vermont Historical Society regularly seeks and receives federal grants that allow our staff to do the important work of preserving and telling Vermont’s stories. The recently completed Research and Exhibition Gallery is the result of a federal grant, as is the COVID oral history project and the accompanying book that the VHS is publishing next month. We are currently in the middle of a federally funded project working with local historical societies and museums to improve their capacity to preserve history.
Much is uncertain as of this writing, but we are confident of two things. First, it does appear that this new approach to federal funding will impact the VHS. The federal sources from which we seek funding will either be significantly curtailed or shuttered completely. Second – and this is critical – we will continue to do our work.
We will remain focused on our mission: “Vermont Historical Society believes understanding the past changes lives and builds better communities.” Our values have not wavered. We will continue to seek ways to expand our understanding of our state’s history to include the stories of all Vermonters.
If, like us, you believe that the study of history creates a ballast in tempestuous times, then we ask for your support. Please consider an additional donation to the VHS this year. As always, your donation will help us preserve Vermont’s treasures, provide stellar educational programming, maintain excellent access to the Leahy Library, and support our local historical societies and museums.
Please help us remain focused on our work, as understanding history remains as critical as ever.
Warmest regards,
