Emma Willard in Middlebury
Emma Willard moved from Connecticut to Middlebury to head a women's school in 1807. Unhappy with the curriculum, she opened her own school to teach women topics such as math, geography, and science. When the state of Vermont refused to support her endeavor she moved the school to Troy, New York.
