Virtual Museum Programs
Students can participate in a Virtual Museum Program to explore Vermont history online through primary sources and artifacts. Lessons combine classwork with an interactive video conference session.
- Mystery Artifacts from the Vermont History Museum - students examine images of mystery artifacts from the museum and make guesses about the items. During a video conference, museum staff provides answers and additional details about the artifacts and their connections to Vermont history. 20 minutes prep time + 30 minutes screen time
- Mapping Vermont History - students investigate a variety of Vermont maps from different time periods to find evidence of change over time. During a video conference, museum staff shares a timeline of Vermont maps and engages students in a discussion about the perspective and purpose of the maps. 30 minutes prep time + 30 minutes screen time
- Letters from Vermont Civil War Soldiers - During a video conference, museum staff introduces students to letters written by Vermont Civil War soldiers, specifically focusing on soldiers' requests for items from home. Afterwards, students have the opportunity to read additional soldier letters and to write their own letters. 30 minutes screen time + 30 minutes post time
- Pandemics Then and Now - During a video conference, students analyze Vermont primary sources from the COVID-19 pandemic and 1918-19 Spanish Influenza pandemic and discuss the importance of archives to historians. Afterwards, students have the opportunity to create their own documentation of the COVID-19 pandemic. 30 minutes screen time + 30 minutes post time.
Program fee is $45.00 per class. Mystery Artifacts is designed for elementary school students; other programs are designed for students in grades 3 and up.
