Context
This beautifully hand-carved ash reel descended in a Missisquoi Abenaki family. These 19th century hand line reels were wound with commercial fish-line and were used by children as well as poorer families who could not afford commercial fishing tackle.

Context
This is a commercially made and sold rig of a type Wiseman remembers being used when he was young in the 1950’s and maybe later. It has the line wound carefully around the rectangular wooden reel. It is in perfect condition, except for the warping of the reel.

Context
Thousands or perhaps millions of these efficient little hand carved ice fishing pole/reel combo tools were carved by everyone who could get onto the ice in the winter, whether Abenaki, French or English. We do know that an Abenaki man from Highgate Springs, Vermont used this to fish off of Shipyard Bay, “over by Bandstand Island” during the early 1900’s.

Context
An amazing find from the Northeast kingdom antique shop in Irasburg. This wrought iron spear was not definitively associated with an Abenaki family but is considered a typical “Indian Trade” item in the literature.
