Broadax

Iron and wood broadax. The head of the ax is bell shaped with a triangular lug, a beveled cutting edge, and resembles a hewing ax. On one side of the ax’s head, a symbol of eight dots that encircles a central, large dot is punched into the iron. The wooden handle is thickest at the shoulder of the ax and becomes rectangular down the belly and grip, with the entire handle slightly curved toward the blade.

Owned by Winfield Scott Schoppe in Canaan, Vermont. Schoppe was woods boss of a logging crew in Canaan for The Connecticut Valley Lumber Co., and was rear boss on the last river drive in 1915.

Corn Knife

Metal and wooden corn knife. The metal blade of the corn knife is curved and inserted into a wooden handle with metal plates and two screws fixed into either side. The natural wooden handle is rounded at the ends and is wrapped with a black band in the lower middle section.

Eel Spear

Metal eel spear consisting of a short handle and 7 barbed tines. There are three U-shaped rods inserted through the central shaft to create the tines. Each has two backward-facing barbs. The handle is hollow for securing over a wooden handle.

Found on the bank of the Connecticut River in Westminster, Vermont, following the 1936 flood.

Sickle

Metal sickle with wooden handle. The blade is an upside down check mark shape with a serrated edge. Angled equidistant parallel lines are etched into the flat part of the blade above the serrated edge. The metal piece is inserted into a short, turned natural wood handle.

Spiral Auger

Spiral auger. The auger is made of a turned wooden t-handle with rounded ends and three etched lines in the middle that line up with the tang of the auger's metal piece. The metal piece is a rounded shaft with spiral flighting starting from the middle and a feed screw at the tip. The metal is rusted and has no additional coloring on the handle or on the metal auger piece.

Tongs

Metal tongs. The handle is two warped tongs with the two sides curve outward and straighten and overlap one another. The hinge intersects the two tongs and flares into rounded arms which overlap at the points. There are no markings and it is rusted.

Tool

Metal and wood sizing tool. The metal sizing tool is hooked at one end with a straight middle section and a metal attachment between the hook and the dark wooden handle. The attachment has a winged metal screw, a small pointed metal piece with guides near the handle, and a thick rectangular band that overlaps the pointed piece and the straight section of the hook. The hand is made of a turned wood with double bands etched near the connection point and three etched bands by the end of the handle.
