Commemorative Ribbon

Commemorative ribbon from "Annual Labor Day Celebration/ East Corinth, Vermont / 1936" The ribbon is blue with gold printing.

Donor was Joseph Cleveland Carter, whose parents, Karl E. Carter and Georgia Amelia Cleveland Carter lived on a farm on Taplin Hill in East Corinth. Joseph was one of their five sons. Karl (1888-1972) and Georgia (1881-1949) married in 1908.

Holder, License

Two license plate holders made of white plastic with green lettering: "VERMONT STATE EMPLOYEES' ASSOC. INC. / PROUD TO BE UNION"
The holders fit over the front and back license plates. They have two holes along the bottom edge to screw the holder over the license plate.

NEA stands for National Education Association. Pin belonged to A. Fern Souther (1907-2004) who was born in Orleans, VT, grew up in Lowell, VT, was an elementary school teacher in Burlington, VT.

Round metal pin with white words over a red ground. The words, "REAL GAINS-NEW PROGRESS/FOR NEW ENGLAND PHONE WORKERS" circles the edge and "VOTE UAW" is in the center over an illustration of two orbits in black.

White, round metal pin with the inscription, "Vote/Independent", around the edge and "IBTW" in the center. An illegible oval logo is printed toward the bottom, along with the number 36.

International Brotherhood of Telephone Workers (IBTW) was a labor union for employees of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company. In 1969-70, members voted to be represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

This pin is likely one from the Peace and Justice Center in Burlington, which was running a campaign concerning livable wages about the time the pin was donated to the Vermont Historical Society.

"Since 1979 the Peace & Justice Center has been a leader in social justice activism in Vermont. Our Board and Staff work with community members, local businesses, non-profit organizations, activists, and volunteers to help all Vermonters achieve self-sufficiency and shared prosperity."

Beginning in 1998, the Peace and Justice Center organized a Vermont Livable Wage campaign involving coalitions from throughout the state. "The Campaign will work to develop a viable worker movement statewide, capable of winning significant wage and benefit gains into the next century. As a result of the Study, Burlington and Montpelier passed a local ordinance setting a minimum wage for permanent city employees."

In 1999, "the Vermont Livable Wage Campaign grew in number and strength. As a result of our increasing network of livable wage campaign members, we turned out 250 folks for a public hearing on the issue held by the Summer Legislative Study Committee. Over 40 people testified, telling their story of what it’s like to earn low wages and giving specific recommendations on how legislators can help."
