The medallion hangs from an eye ring looped through a larger eye ring looped through the ribbon. It shows the bust of Admiral Dewey and another man surrounded by the words, "MANILA BAY MAY 1. SANTIAGO JULY 3. 1898." The hinge on the lid has a 'catch' so it stays open when opened all the way and closes only when pressure is applied.

Bicorn military uniform hat made of black beaver fur. The edge is trimmed with a wide gold ribbon with 2 copper-colored stripes. The brim is raised to stick on the crown at the front and back, leaving the sides low. There is a large gold tassel on either side, sitting on the brim. On the front, there is a wide strap made from the gold ribbon holding a black silk rosette with a brass button.

It was built by Winn Taplin Sr. in the 1920s. He was supervising principal of schools in Fairfax, VT at the time. The son and donor of this radio equipment called it a crystal set, but a Houghton Cate of East Calais suggested several years later that it was a tuned frequency set. Cate built and repaired radios and electronic equipment as far back as the 1930s and was interviewed about this radio in 1996.

Law Enforcement Badge

This silver colored pin belonged to a CAPTAIN of the State of Vermont auxiliary police, Montpelier, VT.

Auxiliary police were established during World War I and again during World War II to assist police departments struggling to fulfill their responsibilities when many officers were away in the armed forces. In 1950, Congress passed a civil defense act creating a civil defense program to help address public safety needs that develop during emergencies.
The time period for this pin wasn't available. Information also wasn't found about auxiliary police in Montpelier.

This pin belonged to Joseph George Abair, born in Dorchester, MA 8/14/1894 to James Fitzgibbons and Mary Smith. He was adopted by George Abair and his wife Phillie Abair. The 1910 US Census shows that Joseph lived in Montpelier with his adoptive parents. The Vermont death record shows that Joseph died in Montpelier on December 2, 1975. His WW I experience was with the 26th Division, an infantry division of the US Army; This division saw extensive combat in France during WW I.

THE TWENTY-SIXTH DIVISION -- the "Yankee Division," as it has been most appropriately named -- was organized from National Guard troops of all the New England States. ... The Twenty-Sixth was the second Division to arrive in France (in World War I); and it was the first division of the National Guard or the National Army troops to be organized, equipped, and sent overseas."

License Plate

Rectangular metal license plate with green ground and white lettering. The words "GREEN MOUNTAINS / VERMONT" are along the top and bottom (respectively) and the license number is "JAN16". A small red sticker in the lower right corner says "EXPIRES LAST DAY OF SEP 78".

Mineral Water Glass Bottle Vermont Spring Water

Dark green glass bottle for local mineral water. The bottle (a) is a round cylinder with long neck and indentation near top. Traces near indention suggest perhaps a wax cover (no longer present) and there is a dried cork (b) still in place. "VERMONT SPRING" is stamped in a rounded half circle using protruding block letters in all capitals. Beneath is "SAXE & Co" beneath which is "SHELDON, VT."

Napkin Rings

Birch bark napkin rings. The first rounded napkin ring in the set (a) is a basket weave design with strips of light bark. The interior is a single complete layer of light birch bark with the cursive handwritten message “Willoughby lake 1923” in black ink. A green ribbon circles the side of the ring and has a bow at the center of the exterior facing side. The second rounded napkin ring (b) is a basket weave design with strips of dark bark woven in horizontally and the light bark vertically. The interior is a single complete layer of light birch bark lining with the words “From Home Farm” in cursive handwriting and in black ink. A red ribbon circles the side of the napkin ring and is tied in a bow at the center of the exterior facing side.

According to paperwork with this donation from Brian Lindler of Waterbury, badges like this were issued in the 1960s and discontinued in the 1970s. " Each part supervisor/caretake was issued a badge with the original issues being in numerical order starting with the longest serving caretaker. Tony Pine at Groton State Forest was badge #1. The badges were created because there was no standard uniform and this program was selected as an inexpensive option to establish authority. In the 1970s, the view reversed when it was decided that badges made the caretakes appear to police-like. In the 1970s my father, Erwin Lindler, was the supervisor for all state parks in norther Vermont. he was ordered to collect all badges."

Gold painted ceramic stick pin. The stick pin is the upper torso of a man in a partial profile. The man has a mustache and wrinkled detailing between the brows and deep indentations on the cheeks. He is wearing a collared, double-breasted coat and epaulets on either shoulder. The nose and left shoulder are chipped.

From Encyclopedia Britannica, "George Dewey was born on December 26, 1837 in Montpelier, Vermont. Upon his graduation from the Naval Academy in 1857, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1861. During the Civil War he served with Admiral Farragut during the Battle of New Orleans and as part of the Atlantic blockade. From 1871 until 1896, Dewey held a variety of positions in the Navy. In 1897 he was named commander of the Asiatic Squadron, thanks to the help of strong political allies, including Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt.

Roosevelt's help was also essential in supplying Dewey with guns, ammunition, and other needed supplies so that his fleet would be prepared if war broke out with Spain. An aggressive commander, Dewey ignored China's neutrality and took on coal for his fleet at Mirs Bay. He was forced to leave Hong Kong on April 25, but not before the U.S.S. Baltimore had arrived from Honolulu with needed ammunition.

Thus prepared for battle, Dewey launched his attack, through mined waters and firing shore batteries, on Admiral Patricio Montojo's slow, outmoded, under-supplied Spanish squadron at Cavite in Manila Bay. On May 1, he engaged the Spanish forces and demolished them, inflicting very heavy casualties. His troops occupied the bay and Manila itself alone until General Wesley Merritt's soldiers arrived in August.

News of the victory in the Battle of Manila Bay reached President McKinley on May 7 and soon Dewey became a national hero."

Smoking Pipe

White clay and amber smoking pipe. The pipe bowl is a clay bust of a man with naturalistic features, such as a mustache and hair made with pronounced lines, and has a suit collar around his neck. The bust tapers into a square section that attaches to a metal piece with a triangle containing three dots etched to the side and marked with “W / D / C.” The amber stem is transparent and a white filter is visible.

Stein

Large stein with metal cover. The body of the stein is molded and painted with a bust portrait of Admiral George Dewey in a military coat. The portrait is within a circle and ringed with the inscription, "THE HERO OF MANILA ADMIRAL GEORGE DEWEY, U.S.N." Dewey is painted in shades of grey. The rest of the stein is molded with abstract florals, painted blue, pink, and red. The cover is heavily molded with floral decorations.

Television

Gray and black metal television with a small glass screen on the front. The rectangular screen is placed behind a round, slightly convex piece of glass set into the proper left side of the machine. The top half of the front as well as the body is covered in silver metal punched throughout with small holes to allow both sound from the speakers and heat from the machine to escape. The lower half of the front panel is black metal with three large openings for knobs (now missing) and fourteen small openings for knobs (still in place). The front is labeled in two places with the manufacturer's logo and name, "the hallicrafters co."

Pressed glass tumbler heavily molded with imagery of Admiral George Dewey and militaria. The glass is molded to have a rough ground, bordered on the top by a rope and the bottom by repeated stacks of cannonballs. One side shows a bust portrait of Dewey within a laurel wreath topped with a flying eagle. The other side shows crossed flags over a cannon.

Clear whiskey glass. The whiskey glass has a thin rim on a slightly flared body and circular mouth that leads down into multi-faceted indentations around the bottom of the bowl and base. The heavy base of the glass has a hollowed arch on the bottom that mirrors the curve of the bowl.
