Clock

Clock France Gift of the State of Vermont, 1964.63.125 In 1949, the French people shipped 49 boxcars filled with tokens of gratitude for the trainloads of food, clothing, and medicine that the United States had sent in 1947 to assist France's recovery following World War II. The "Merci Train," a response to the "American Friendship Train," arrived in February. There was an antique boxcar full of gifts and messages for each of the 48 states, plus one for Hawaii and the District of Columbia to share. Vermont's boxcar arrived in the state aboard a flatbed car on February 9. It made short stops in Brattleboro, Bellows Falls, and White River Junction on its way to Montpelier. The official welcoming ceremony took place on February 10, and included Governor Ernest W. Gibson Jr. and Count Max de Montalembert, the French vice-consul in Boston. Vermont's boxcar contained hundreds of items--dolls, toys, paintings, crafts, pencil boxes, embroidered collars, wooden puppets, ornamental fans, paintings, vases, trinkets, books, cards, and letters. Some of the artwork was given to the Fleming Museum at the University of Vermont in Burlington, some French books to Middlebury College, and individual items were sent via legislators to towns and libraries throughout the state. The remainder--nearly 200 items--has been in the custody of and stored at the Vermont Historical Society. Pieces from the collection have been displayed twice since they arrived in that boxcar 70 years ago--in the 1950s and in 1988.

Doily, 1964.63.120 Linen France Gift of the State of Vermont, 1964 In 1949, the French people shipped 49 boxcars filled with tokens of gratitude for the trainloads of food, clothing, and medicine that the United States had sent in 1947 to assist France's recovery following World War II. Bermont's boxcar contained hundreds of items--dolls, toys, paintings, crafts, pencil boxes, embroidered collars, wooden puppets, ornamental fans, paintings, vases, trinkets, books, cards, and letters.

Description
There are 25 used envelops with stamps from African countries, most from Congo. Many are addressed to Jean Mosinski, who also sent a card with his name and best regards. There was a large envelop found with the stamped envelops that said "Pour un Philatelitte" or stamp collector.
There are also two see-through envelops containing never used stamps. Six show a man in a uniform and give his name as General LeClerc. In another envelop are three stamps with a winged figure declaring "Pour le salut public OUI." I added two stamps that fell out from among the envelops and have never been used. They show a girl and say "Tuberculose."

Exode des paysans devant l'ennemi
Interpretative Labels
Exode des paysans devant l'ennemi, 1940 Joseph Pinchon (1871-1953) Paris, France Oil on board Gift of State of Vermont, 1964.63.182 Joseph Pinchon was born in Amiens, France, the second of eight children. He studied in Paris, and began working as an illustrator for children's magazines. In 1905, he created the character Becassine, and became one of the earliest and best artists developing a new style of illustration that would be called, in French, "bandes dessinees" (In America, we would call them comics, but their cultural role in France is very different). He continued to work as a prolific illustrator and artist for the rest of his life, with occasional forays into different art forms. In addition to the oil painting you see here, Pinchon also served briefly as the costume director for the Opera Garnier in Paris.

This collection of items includes a family photograph with a note on the back saying it was taken at the first communion of Jean-Loup. A boy in the photo has a white ribbon tied on the sleeve of his jacket, a white handkerchief in his breast pocket and white gloves. A third shows Jesus giving someone communion. Handwritten on the back is the name of the boy in the picture at his first communion.
The envelop has a note that says, "A nos chers amis d'Amerique" (To my dear American friends).

Trivet
Interpretative Labels
Trivet Students at the College Moderne et Technique Monceau-les-Mines, France Metal Gift of the State of Vermont, 1964.63.64 In 1949, the French people shipped 49 boxcars filled with tokens of gratitude for the trainloads of food, clothing, and medicine that the United States had sent in 1947 to assist France's recovery following World War II. Bermont's boxcar contained hundreds of items--dolls, toys, paintings, crafts, pencil boxes, embroidered collars, wooden puppets, ornamental fans, paintings, vases, trinkets, books, cards, and letters.
