Apple Peeler
Interpretative Labels
Apple Peeler, 1825 Russell Hoyt Craftsbury, VT Wood, metal Gift of Clara Lucena Buswell, 1972.3.2 Apples have always been a core food product for Vermont, and many uses of apples require them to be peeled and cored. Introducing a mechanical device to the process speeds things up considerably, reducing the tedium of the task and preserving more of the apple’s flesh. There are dozens of potential variations on mechanical parers, including many commercially made variations (see 2014.60.1033 in this same exhibition). This apple parer is homemade and quite simple. It only performs one part of the process: turning the apple. The user would secure the long board part – possibly with clamps or possibly by sitting on it – and stick the apple onto the turning arm. Twirling the lever then rotates the apple, while the user would hold a knife steady to remove the peel. Notably, the tine where the apple would be stuck appears to be a repurposed kitchen implement. Russell Hoyt of Craftsbury made this apple parer sometime in the 19th century, and passed it down through his family.

Apple Peeler
Interpretative Labels
Apple Peeler, circa 1856 Horatio Keyes (1830-1904) Leominster, MA Cast iron, steel Barre History Collection, #2014.60.1033 Apples have always been a core food product for Vermont, and many uses of apples require them to be peeled and cored. Introducing a mechanical device to the process speeds things up considerably, reducing the tedium of the task and preserving more of the apple’s flesh. There are dozens of potential variations on mechanical parers, including many homemade variations (see 1972.3.2 in this same exhibition), but this variation, patented by Horatio Keyes in 1856, introduced the idea of moving the paring arm around the apple via a geared turntable, a huge leap forward in speed and convenience.
Name/Title
Apple Peeler
Lexicon
Description
Metal device known as an apple peeler or parer.

On one end, a vise with a wingnut screw holds the device to a flat surface such as a table or counter. On the side a wooden handle turns a large gear. That gear is connected via two more gears to a center column on a spring, with a horizontal blade at the end. It is also connected to a central shaft at the top of the parer with a three-pronged end.

On the base gear, from which the center column extends, is written “Patented – By H. Keyes June 17 & Dec. 16, 1856.”

When the handle is turned, it activates both the blade and the pronged end. An apple held on the pronged end would rotate around its core while the central blade would move to peel different parts of the apple on a cycle.

Awl
Interpretative Labels
Nathaniel Burbank of South Walden, Vermont wen to sea in 1858 and didn't return home until after the end of the Civil War. The logbook was kept of his first voyage aboard the Joseph Grinnell, which sailed for the Pacific Ocean out of Bedford, Massachusetts on June 18, 1858 under William Thomas as Master. Burbank made his awls from whalebone and drew the picture of his prey, the Sperm whale. Throughout his voyage he would stamp the book with a whale for a capture and a whale's tail for one that got away. Burbank's written accounts of his whaling career end in 1862. His accounts in this book continued in 1872 listing produce from and work on his Vermont farm.

Interpretative Labels
Basket, 1840-1860 Abenaki Cambridge, Vermont Ash Gift of Frederick M. Wiseman, #2017.3.4 Vermont Abenaki families from ancient Indigenous communities such as Missisquoi and Koas, as well as from smaller and more dispersed enclaves in the northeastern and southeastern parts of the state, were extremely important to early 19th century Vermont commerce and transportation. Travel in the summer on lakes and rivers took place in locally produced bark canoes, while winter journeys were often made on snowshoes while pulling bentwood toboggans built by Abenaki. Indigenous-made utilitarian and decorative ash splint baskets held everything from produce to bonnets and could be found for sale in many general stores.

Abenaki Basket, Early 20th Century Addison County Ash Museum Purchase, #1990.33.1 Abenakis lived in communities throughout Vermont with village centers at Swanton and Highgate. They continued to maintain cultural identity and tradition in the face of new history publications that falsely erased them from the historical record and programs such as the Eugenics Survey that sought to remove them physically from the general population. Abenaki people long participated in Vermont’s economy through the sale of goods and services. Some of the most iconic and recognizable goods included baskets, snowshoes, and canoes. The Sweetser family of Morrisville, with their unique baskets of a blended Abenaki and European design, went from local to national renown when wealthy tourists and collectors sought their products. The Obomsawin family, headed by patriarch Simon, made a name for themselves selling handcrafts to tourists visiting the exclusive Cedar Beach resort community on Lake Champlain. Abenaki throughout the region sold traditional goods and served as guides for fishermen and hunters in the Green and White Mountains, and Quebec. To externally express an “Indian” identity, some Abenaki adopted dress based on that of Western Indians as this imagery was most recognizable to non-Abenaki residents and visitors.

Interpretative Labels
Abenaki Basket, Early 20th Century Addison County Ash, sweetgrass Museum Purchase, #1990.33.4 Abenakis lived in communities throughout Vermont with village centers at Swanton and Highgate.

Gertrude Lepine of Morrisville recalled that her mother, Imelda lepine, traded a pair of mittens she knitted with Frank Sweetser for this basket. The Sweetser family of Waterbury was a prolific basket-making family. At least three generations of the family wove baskets during the winter and then sold them in and around Morristown, Stowe, and Waterbury. Oral and written history from the Sweetsers document that Gilman Sweetser was "part Indian" and he married Lydia Hall a Abenakis Indian. John Sweetser said that it was his grandfather Gilman, "that showed the whole of us how to make baskets." In addition to this basket VHS owns examples made by John Sweetser and by father and daughter, Samuel Sweetser and Belle Sweetser Perry, John's uncle and cousin.

Description
This is a fireplace bellows that is made of carved wood, metal, and leather. The front side of the bellows is delicately hand-carved to resemble the face of a man with acanthus leaf designs stemming outward around the face. The back side is also carved with an open circular hole in the center, surrounded by curved lines that spiral outward, with a decorative border around the edges.

The handles of the bellows are also carved, with a tapered shape and beveled, bulbous areas at the top for grasping. The back handle has a small double rectangular strap attached, which is most likely used for hanging the object. The spout on the end of the bellows is curved and slightly tapered, with a slightly split opening.

The leather is tanned and slightly worn and is attached to the wooden carved pieces with metal nails that have developed a slight blue patina around the outer edges. The wood and leather are varying shades of dark brown overall.

In 1938, the statue of Ceres on top of the gold dome of the Vermont State House was removed. The hand from that statue can be seen elsewhere in this case. 87-year-old Dwight Dwinnell, Sergeant-at-Arms of the State House, used these tools to carve a replacement for it based on Mead's original. Dwinnell's Ceres is considered today to be an important piece of folk art, and recently underwent restoration.

Additionally, there is a hole on the top of the bootjack which can be used to hang it on the wall.

Beneath the bootjack, there is a support that measures 3.88 inches in length, 1.5 inches in width, and 0.75 inches in height. The support is held in place with square nails. The wood of the bootjack has never been painted.

Description
This is a bottle holder branded as "Mothers Helper." It consists of a series of springs that are attached to the side rails of a baby's crib. By placing a feeding bottle, pacifier, or toy in the center springs, it can hold the object in place above the baby. The hooks located at either end of the device appear to be made of brass.

The product is packaged in a bag that features a sketch of a baby in a crib, with the Mothers Helper holding a bottle. The directions on the bag explain how to use the device for feeding or playing, as well as how to make adjustments. The bag indicates that a patent application had been submitted, and the Mothers Helper was manufactured by Allen Knight, based in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

Broadax
Interpretative Labels
Broad Ax, c. 1850 Consider Stebbins Bardwell (1807-1885) Pawlet, Vermont Steel, wood Gift of Dorothy Offensend, #1998.36.1 Consider Bardwell moved to Pawlet, Vermont from Massachusetts in 1842 to take possession of 34 acres of land along the Indian Brook. He made improvements to the property and water-power source to advance his edged-tool manufacturing business. Over time he added more properties to his holdings including a small slate quarry to produce roofing slate. Bardwell produced edged tools from about 1846 to 1867. In addition to owning a slate quarry, which he leased to a third-party operator, he also created the first cooperative creamery in Vermont. Established in 1864 and incorporated by the Vermont Legislature in 1865, the West Pawlet Dairy Association collected surplus milk from area farmers and manufactured butter and cheese for the open market. By the end of 1867 Bardwell stepped back from his various business ventures, ultimately selling his properties in 1869. He retired to a grand brick residence in Granville, New York where he lived until his death in 1885. The site of the creamery in Pawlet is now an award-winning, artisanal cheese facility named after Consider Bardwell.

Brush
Interpretative Labels
In 1938, the statue of Ceres on top of the gold dome of the Vermont State House was removed. The hand from that statue can be seen elsewhere in this case. 87-year-old Dwight Dwinnell, Sergeant-at-Arms of the State House, used these tools to carve a replacement for it based on Mead's original. Dwinnell's Ceres is considered today to be an important piece of folk art, and recently underwent restoration.

Butter Churn
Interpretative Labels
Butter "Swing" Churn, 1877-1900 Vermont Farm Machinery Company (1871-1921) Bellows Falls, VT Wood Gift of Kathryn O. Jorgensen, #2012.42 The Vermont Farm Machinery Company, based in Bellows Falls, patented this "swing" churn in the 1870s and manufactured it for a number of years after that. Butter is the consolidation of the fat solids contained in milk; farmers would skim the cream from jars of milk as a first step, and then pour the cream into a churn, which would agitate the cream and encourage the fat solids to clump together. On a small scale, this can be done by hand, but in order to produce butter in bulk, some kind of mechanization is necessary. The Davis Swing Churn appeared in a number of sizes, holding between 4 and 50 gallons of cream, depending on the model number. This Model No. 5 could hold 13 gallons of cream. (The Model 9, which held 50 gallons of cream, no longer fit on a frame, and had to be suspended from a ceiling.) The company claimed that the gentle swinging action of the churn did not "injure" the butter.

There are two turned wooden handles across the top on either end, and metal brackets in the equivalent location on the bottom to attach the church to a wooden frame (now missing). Description
"Morrison Vignetter" camera accessory set consisting of a two-part mount, four vignetting cards, a box, and instructions.

The box (ab) is made of cardboard and covered in lime-green semi-gloss paper. The label on the lid has a vignetted portrait of a child on the proper right, and an illustration of the vignetter attached to the lens of a King Poco model camera on the proper left. Beneath the images is the inscription, "MORRISON VIGNETTER/BURKE & JAMES, Chicago".

The four vignetters (c-f) are cardboard pieces: two in black and two in white (one now grey). The boards are straight on the bottom, but the top curves up to create the vignette shape. Two of the boards have a sawtooth edge on the top, and the other two have less pronounced nicked edge on the top. Each board shows evidence of being slid into the metal mounts for use, but the pieces with the less-pronounced edges appear to have been more heavily used.

The boards mount in front of the camera's lens with two pieces of metal (h,i). Both pieces are made from flat metal strips. The piece that connects to the lens consists of a strip bent into a circle to which an L-bent strip is attached. The other piece is bent into a narrow U-shape on one end (for attaching the vignetting board) and a wider U on the other side that can be tightened with a bolt. The two attach by sliding the flat edge of the lens side into the clamp at the wide-U side of the other piece and tightening the connection with the bolt.

The instructions are in a bi-fold with example images on the front page and detailed steps on the inside.

Compass, 1783 John Gardner Glasgow, Scotland Brass, wood Gift of George P. Whitelaw, 1885.1.1a-c Genl. James Whitelaw was chosen Surveyor General of Vermont, Oct. 1787, being the second Surveyor General, was re-elected every year till 1805, a period of 18 years. In 1783 whilst deputy Surveyor under Ira Allen (the then Surveyor General) he ordered a compass to be made by John Gardner of Glasgow, Scotland, which he received in 1784. This compass with chain, magnet &c. he used during the rest of his life and whilst Surveyor General of the State. At his death in 1829 it came into the possession of his Grandson John B. Whitelaw of Ryegate, VT , then 23 years old, who had learned surveying from his Grandfather, and who followed the profession at various times during his life, lastly in Wisconsin. John B. Whitelaw died in Griggsville, Ills., Dec. 4th 1884 at residence of his sister Susan White, and the identical compass, magnet, chain &c. purchased from John Gardener, sent to Vermont in 1784 and used by General Whitelaw while Surveyor General, is now in possession of his Great Grandson, Geo. P. Whitelaw of St. Louis, Mo. About the year 1864 Thos. Goodwillie of Barnet, VT, read a paper on the life of General Whitelaw before the Historical Society of Vermont at its meeting in St. Johnsbury, in which he suggested acquiring the surveying instruments, considering they would be a valuable addition to their Historical collections. This sketch of Genl. Whitelaws life was published in the Caledonian of St. Johnsbury Nov 18, 1864, and Geo. P. Whitelaw finding a copy of same among his fathers effects, has concluded to offer to donate these Surveying instruments to the Historical Society of the State of Vermont, if they so desire. There is no doubt of the identity of these instruments. The compass having John Gardeners name on the face, and it came direct from Genl. Whitelaw to his Grandson John B. Whitelaw, and who only died in December last, and from him to his son Geo. P. Whitelaw of St. Louis Mo., who makes this offer. [label copy ca. 1885]
