In 1886, a Smallpox outbreak in Montreal scuttled that year's Winter Carnival: a giant festival of winter sports. City leaders in Burlington saw the opportunity to hold their own Winter Carnival that year, which included traverse sledding, skating, and the first international hockey competition.

VHS Executive Director Steve Perkins and ABC 22 & Fox 44 anchor Mike Hoey stop by the city to learn more about the event.
