John Humphrey Noyes, leader of the Oneida Community in New York, was originally from Putney. He was a leader in the Perfectionist religious movement of the mid-19th century. His belief in multiple marriage was unpopular, but the Oneida silverware company grew out of the community and still makes tableware today.
