Hiram Powers, the famous 19th century sculptor, was born in Woodstock. He made his name carving a marble bust of President Andrew Jackson. After moving to Italy, he carved The Greek Slave, a popular figurine that was reproduced for decoration in homes and buildings, including the Vermont State House.
