Membership ribbon consisting of two bars, ribbon, and medallion. The upper bar is in the shape of a spread eagle over crossed cannons. A second bar pin is pinned onto the ribbon and consists of a gold border, blue ground, and two silver stars. The ribbon is woven to look like a small United States flag. The medallion is in the shape of a five-pointed star. At the center of the star is a group of men shaking hands over a woman on her knees. The man on the left is in a naval uniform, and the man on the right is wearing a forage cap and has his left hand on a child's head. A third figure, much taller than the other two stands in the background. The group is flanked by flags, and the inscription, "GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC / 1961 VETERAN 1866", rings the scene. Each point of the star bears a military symbol: two crossed swords, two crossed long guns, two crossed cannons, a curved horn, and an anchor. There is a bar connecting the top two points, indicating that the star originally hung from a ribbon.

Sword, 1857 Ames Manufacturing Company Chicopee, MA Steel, gold, mother of pearl Gift of Philip Sawyer, 1933.3.3ab Horace Bucklin Sawyer (1797-1860) received a commission as a midshipman in the United States Navy in June 1812 at age 15, and served on the crew of the USS Eagle in naval operations on Lake Champlain during the War of 1812. He was captured and held prisoner by the British for six months, and when released, reported back for duty. Assigned to the USS Constitution in December 1814, he served onboard for her famous battle with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant in February 1815. He stayed in the Navy after the war, progressing to the rank of captain in 1855, but suffered from near-total deafness apparently caused by injuries he had received during the capture of the USS Eagle. In 1856, the state of Vermont presented him with this sword in honor of his long service and in particular recognition of his participation in the USS Constitution's service.

Interpretative Labels
This sword was worn only as part of a dress uniform. Peck received the right to wear the sword when he received his commission as a 2nd lieutenant for his participation in Civilian Military Training Camp (CMTC). These camps were authorized by the National Defense Act of 1920 as an extra measure in preparing for the nation's military readiness. The camps provided an introduction to military training for young men of high school or college age to prepare them for the Reserve of National Guard duty. Peck spent a month each of four summers in addition to other preparations including correspondence courses as part of the CMTC program. The first summer camp was near Boston, and the succeeding three summers were at Fort Ethan Allen in Vermont. Upon completion, Peck was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant. Peck was called to active service while still in undergraduate school at Notre Dame. This sword would have been attached to a Sam Browne belt, a wide belt, usually leather, which is supported by a strap going diagonally over the right shoulder. It is most often seen as part of military or police uniforms.
