Wooden model of the foundation of the Vermont State House. The model is on a wooden board, which is covered in several pencil notes. The outline of the foundation is raised about 1/4" with spaces for windows and doors. There is a stairway at each end.

Shows the foundation of the Vermont State House, built 1833 to 1837. Used to determine block sizes and quantities by the people who were quarrying the granite for the foundation.

No information was found on this business, but the location -- 16 Brook St. in Barre -- is now (2024) called Guy's Repair Shop, handling small engine repairs.

Ballot box used by members of the Northfield Grange. The rectangular box has a slight overhang for the top and base, and the top is divided into two hinged lids with a center pinned section to secure them. The vertical sides have mitered and pinned corners. The front section has two hinges connecting it to the center joint, and the lid lifts with interior curved sides and the front vertical panel to reveal a shallow compartment. There are wire stops on either side to hold this section open. There is a vertical divider between the front and back sections of the box with a round hole cut in the middle of it for placing a vote through anonymously. The back section of the ballot box has a flat hinged lid to cover it that rests on the vertical sides. There is a turned handle pinned to the middle of the back of the ballot box.

"Capital City Grange was chartered in May, 1914, and originally met in a Hall in downtown Montpelier, on Elm St. After World War II, faced with increasing property taxes and maintenance costs, the Grange and the Odd Fellows Fraternity sold the Hall they shared, and purchased property on the Northfield Road, south of Montpelier, on which to build a new Hall.

Construction began in fall of 1952, and was completed in 1953. The Hall was built largely with volunteer labor! Workers included men and women, continuing an inclusive tradition which has been part of the Grange since its founding. The Grange owns an 8mm film, which has been put onto a DVD, showing Grange and Odd Fellows members working on the Hall in all phases. The film chronicles opening ceremonies with Grange and Vermont state dignitaries, and concludes by showing the burning of the mortgage for the property in 1966.

Grange Halls have hosted dances from the earliest days of the Order, as a vital part of the rural social life. Dances of all sorts have been held at the Capital City Grange Hall since its construction—the dance floor was an important part of its construction and design! Sometime in the 1970s or 1980s, a regular contra dance began being held in the Grange Hall, coexisting with a regular Western Square dance originally. In the late 1990s, the Grange began to find itself running out of members and energy to keep the building going. Master Les Skinner invited the regular renters of the Hall, including the contra dancers, the Church of Christ and others to help the Grange with maintenance work—and to consider joining the Grange as well. It took a few years, and a recurring sense of emergency need to recruit a new crop of members for the Grange, mostly from the contra dance community. The VT State Grange was initially reluctant, not wanting people to join “just to save the dance hall”, but was persuaded that there was a true interest in the traditional purposes and activities of the Grange, as well as the desire to save the dance hall!"

Long banner made of white vinyl. It features five brass grommets along the top edge and another five along the bottom edge. The majority of the lettering on the banner is blue, with a row of red lettering positioned at the bottom edge. At each end of the lowest row of text, there is a U.S. flag displayed. The entire piece is bordered by two rows of straight stitching, which serve to fold the edges under neatly. The text on the banner reads: "KOREAN WAR VETERANS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY DEDICATION 50TH Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice FREEDOM IS NOT FREE." The banner consists solely of text, aside from the inclusion of the two U.S. flags.

Crumpled, empty box pierced throughout with holes. The lid of the box has a hand-written paper labels that reads, "This box contains a Live Baby Panther / Caution / Do not feed in Transit". The reverse has hand written address label with two 3-cent stamps, the return address, "From Horace M. Abrams / Schoharie. N.Y" and sending address, "To / Dr. Arthur W. Peach / Vermont Historical Society / Montpelier / Vermont". A small note written across the bottom of the label reads, "Contains Merchadise - 4th Class. - POSTMASTER. - This parcel may be opened for Post Office inspection of merchandise." One side of the box is missing a flap, and the other flap is crushed open. The lid hinges open with a fabric tape hinge.

Inside the box is a flat piece of paper with (presumably fake) small animal poop glued to the center top and the handwritten inscription, "Well, he Was here, but he must have got away."

Given to Vermont Historical Society Director Arthur Peach as a prank by Horace Abrams, during the "panther craze" when several sightings of catamounts were reported across the state of Vermont. The phrase on the inside is a reference to people not being able to prove their claims because the catamount was not present.

"Back to school supplies included laundry mailing boxes for many college-bound students in the early twentieth century. The reusable mailing containers provided a convenient way to deal with a time-consuming cleaning job. Using the mail also saved on cost because shipping grubby clothes home to mother could be cheaper than a professional cleaner. From the 1910s into the 1960s, mailing laundry was an attractive option for anyone without the time, means, or resources to do the chore themselves. It suited undergraduates, summer campers, military personnel, and others."

Eight printed calling cards. Two are printed with an illustration of a swan in a pond, with hand coloring in green and pink on the surrounding foliage. One is printed with an ornate floral frame flanked with an angel on either side. There is pink and green hand coloring within the florals. One is printed with an illustration of a pansy with a large leaf. The inscription, “Vainly shall we list for voices / Made by absence doubly dear: / And remorse will sternly question, / Didst thou cherish them when here?” The pansy is partially hand colored pink, and the stem and leaf are outlined in green. There are four plain calling cards, each embossed with a floral frame around the edges. On two of the plane cards is written in pencil the inscription, “Jenny Andrews, Northfield, VT.”

There is a slot on the side where finished photos emerge. Numbers 1,2,3 and 4 on the camera probably coincide with the steps to follow to take photographs.
There are two flash attachments for the camera.

Black Ikoflex camera in a brown leather case. The twin-lens reflex (TLR) camera has a boxy shape and is equipped with a square viewfinder that opens at the top. It features two lenses on the front and has knobs protruding from the side of the case. Additionally, it comes with a neck strap. Accompanying the camera is a Kalart vertical flash attachment, consisting of a silver cylinder and a black exterior dish. Inside the dish, there is a small light bulb, while the dish itself is silver. To connect the flash to the camera, there is a black arm with an adjustable screw for attachment and a socket for the flash, complete with calibrations on the outside. Lastly, there is an L-shaped metal piece, featuring a black-topped screw on one arm and slots on the other arm for attaching something at the end.

The pole is set into a large wooden cross base.

The weight of its body is held up by a metal support. The tail is broken in two places and held in place by an interior wire. The base is rectangular, with a roughly carved top and smooth sides. It is labeled, "Arthur W. Peach". The tall base sits on a wider, but shorter rectangular base.

There are 25 used envelops with stamps from African countries, most from Congo. Many are addressed to Jean Mosinski, who also sent a card with his name and best regards. There was a large envelop found with the stamped envelops that said "Pour un Philatelitte" or stamp collector.
There are also two see-through envelops containing never used stamps. Six show a man in a uniform and give his name as General LeClerc. In another envelop are three stamps with a winged figure declaring "Pour le salut public OUI." I added two stamps that fell out from among the envelops and have never been used. They show a girl and say "Tuberculose."

Hand fan made of a paperboard stapled to a wooden shim. The fan board is in the shape of a shield and is printed with a border that shows an owl at the top, flowers at the sides, and rabbits at the bottom. In the center is a black-and-white photograph of a man leading a horse into a building. The man is wearing a hat, vest, shirt, and pants, and is carrying a shovel. He has a long white beard. The horse is wearing blinders and a plow harness. The image is labeled at the center bottom, "WHEN THE DAY IS OVER".

The back of the fan bears the inscription, "COMPLIMENTS OF A. G. FREEGARD / Dealer in GENERAL MERCHANDISE FEED AND COAL / WHITING VT."
