Making History: Relics, Then and Now
In the winter of 2018, Middlebury College students under the direction of Professor Ellery Foutch studied material culture and focused their attention on a particular object from the collections of the Henry Sheldon Museum: a relic chair constructed by Sheldon. The students created their own, modern relic chair, borrowing the same concept of creating something new out of historically or personally significant pieces. Both chairs are currently on exhibit at the Vermont History Museum.
In this program, Foutch will provide background on the concept and practice of relic pieces, discussing why and how they were constructed and used. She will also talk about the process Middlebury students used to research and build their own chairs.
