Introduction to Museum Work
An online course from the Vermont Historical Society
Join us for our new six-week online class taught by staff members at the Vermont Historical Society covering some of the basics of museum work. Whether you’re a volunteer at a local historical society, a student looking to learn more about the museum field, or just want to know more about what goes into running a museum, this course aims to give anyone who is interested basic information about museum work from theory to administration to financials to programming.
The course will cover:
Week 1: Museum Foundations
The creation and evolution of museums, their ethical considerations, and their changing role in the world today.
Week 2: Collections & Archives
The basics of managing collections & archives for museums, including the creation of a collections policy, organization, storage, public access, and exhibition considerations.
Week 3: Development
How museums find and maintain funding through donors, foundations, public funding, and how to create and manage those relationships.
Week 4: Education Pre-K-12
The research behind creating quality educational programs for school-aged constituents, including working with children and families, and fostering learning using exhibits, artifacts and primary sources.
Week 5: Administration & Finance
Museum governance and administration, including board relations, as well as the basics of financial management, including understanding basic reporting.
Week 6: Programming & Outreach
Engaging with the public within & beyond the walls of your museum, building & sustaining one-time and ongoing programming, and presentation & communications strategies.
Each week will contain:
- One 90-minute online class each Tuesday morning (live participation is encouraged, but not required)
- 2-3 readings
- Short assignments and group discussions.
Total expected commitment from students of 3-4 hours/week.
