Ask a Librarian

You can ask our librarians and library volunteers questions about Vermont history online!

The VHS does not have the state's vital records or newspapers.  Please do not request birth, death, marriage records or obituaries with these forms. See Genealogy Research Resources for more information on obtaining vital records.

Please click on a link below to access a form for inputting your inquiry and for submitting payment for this service. Payment with a reference request does not guarantee results.

  • Quick Reference Request. This option is for asking simple, "ready reference" questions that will involve a minimal amount of research. Example: "When did Vermont become an independent state?" Free. If the inquiry is to complex to answer quickly we will ask you to fill out our Research Request Form (next option).
  • Research Request. Use this form for making a more substantial reference inquiry that will require our staff and volunteers to use printed, archival, and online sources. Example: "Who did John Smith marry and when?" Minimum charge $15/half hour for members, $20/half hour for non-members.
  • Order Scans of Documents.
  • Order Scans of Photographs.

You can reach us at library@vermonthistory.org or at (802) 479-8509. We are open Tuesday through Friday, 9-4; Wednesdays 9-8; and the second Saturday of each month, 9-4.
