Vermont Governors

Vermont has had 78 individuals serve as governor.  This gallery contains likenesses of each of these individuals (77 men and 1 woman).

These images are from the collection of governors' portraits at the Vermont Historical Society. The collection was begun in 1908 when Elmer Chickering made copies for the VHS of the governors' portraits at the State House and at the Vermont Association of Boston. There were originally 49 portraits made by Mr. Chickering; the collection has been added to over the years.

Most of the scans on this website were created for our collections records and so may include imperfections such as reflections of the photographer.  Reproduction quality images are available from the Vermont Historical Society. The images in this website are not the official gubernatorial portraits that currently hang in the Vermont State House.

Click on an image below to see  a group of 15 governors. Click on each governor's portrait to see a larger image along with the dates of his or her term of office and party affiliation.
