Houghton Civil War Photographs

"A Very Fine Appearance:" The Vermont Civil War Photographs of George Houghton by Donald H. Wickman was released by the Vermont Historical Society on April 12, 2011. Ken Burns, PBS filmmaker, commented on the book, "This is a wonderful, intimate portrait of the war that still continues to define us." You can also visit the VHS online store to order a copy of "A Very Fine Appearance" in hardcover or paperback.

This is a selection of just a few of the photographs that are included in this book, the first ever to feature the work of Vermont's own Civil War photographer. Click an image below to enlarge.
