Decorative Civil War Registers

The broadside collection at the Vermont Historical Society’s Leahy Library contains 31 different original, illustrated lithographic registers for units of Vermont Volunteers that served during the Civil War. These large, handsome items, entitled either “Soldier’s Memorial” or “Military Register,” were produced in nine different designs by six different companies. Represented in the collection are monochromatic and chromolithographs by Currier and Ives (2 designs); A. Hoen & Co. (2 designs); Major & Knapp (copyright 1864); Sarony, Major & Knapp; H. Schroeder; Schroeder and Sanders (1862); and Chas. Shober. An example of each of these registers is shown below. Double click on each image to get a larger view. The units listed by each register will appear in the caption below the image. Larger versions of the images can be viewed by clicking on the red "larger image" link for each image.

The library is interested in learning about different versions and additional copies of these registers. Please contact the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with additional holdings information.
