Historical Significance

Tammy Marcotte Surprise joined the Vermont Air National Guard in 1984. Her first position was in Avionics; a year and a half later she moved to the Civil Engineering Squadron. Concurrently, Surprise had a civilian job as the Commandant's Secretary at Norwich University. She married Chuck (an Army Artillery Soldier) in 1990 and their son Steven was born in 1991.

She was faced with the challenge of balancing the roles of mother, Airman, wife of a soldier and career woman. In addition, she volunteered for the family Support Group for both the Army Guards and the Air Guard. During the 1998 ice storm both she and her husband were active in the disaster clean-up. There were a number of times in which she and her husband were simultaneously called for military duties, leaving their son in his grandmother's care.

Surprise started a new job with the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development in 2001. On September 11, 2001, she was activated by the Presidents orders to support the homeland security "Operation Noble Eagle". In about 2002, she received the "Molly Pitcher" award and medal for her role as an Artillery Soldiers wife with the Family Support Group from the Army's Artillery Association.

Surprise retired from the Vermont Air National Guard in 2004, after 20 years of service. She continued with her job at USDA Rural Development.
