Historical Significance

Diane B. Snelling has served three consecutive terms in the Vermont State Senate. She is the daughter of Richard Snelling (1927-1991), former governor of Vermont, and Barbara Snelling (1928-), a former Vermont State Senator and Lieutenant Governor. Snelling was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 18, 1952 and graduated from Champlain Valley Union High School in Hinesburg, Vermont in 1970. She received her AB degree from Radcliffe College, a branch of Harvard University, in 1974, and later completed a Masters of Arts Degree from New York University in 1994. Snelling was a Designer and Creative Manager at Aniforms in New York City from 1976-1982, and was President of Muse Creative Management from 1982-1992. After receiving her Masters Degree, Snelling was an Art and Communications Lecturer at Trinity College, located in Burlington, Vermont (1994-1997).

Snelling became a resident of Hinesburg in 1983 and served her community by being on the Hinesburg Planning Commission in 1984 and the Hinesburg Select Board from 1985-1991. While pursuing a career as an artist and teacher, Snelling was also involved in various Chittenden County organizations. She served on the Board of Directors for the Greater Burlington Industrial Corporation, was on the Chittenden Affordable Housing Committee, was a trustee for the King Street Youth Center and was a member of the Robert Hull Fleming Museum Advisory Board. Snelling was on the Board of Directors at the Snelling Center for Government, which was formed in memory of her father, and was an advisor to the Friends of the UVM Horticulture Farm.

When Snelling's mother, Barbara, suffered an illness in 2002, and was unable to complete her Vermont State Senate term, Diane was appointed by Governor Howard Dean to complete her mother's term. She ran for election in 2002, and has since been re-elected twice, in 2004 and 2006. In the 2002 election, she was the third highest vote getter out of eighteen people running for six seats in the Senate. As a member of the Senate, she has served on the following committees: Appropriations, Natural Resources and Energy, Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules, Mental Health Oversight Committee, Health Access Oversight Committee, No Child Left Behind Federal Education Act Oversight Committee, Judicial Retention Committee, Joint Fiscal Committee, Groundwater Work Group, and TANF Work Group. In 2006 she was named "Legislator of the Year," by the Vermont Health Care Association.
