Mona Elaine Pillsbury served in the U.S. Army from April 27, 1951 to April 16, 1954. She was trained at Fort Lee Virginia and the Southern Signal School, Camp Gordon, Ga. She was deployed in Yokohama Japan from 1953-1954. Her duties in the Army included work as a High Speed Radio Operator (1766), as well as sending and receiving coded (Morse Code) messages. She received three medals during her military service: Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Pillsbury reminisced about her time in the military: "My time (3 years) laid the ground work for my future life in that I carried security classifications that enabled me to acquire employment after discharge that I would otherwise not have been eligible for, and carried me through a lifetime of enjoyable/profitable employment."

After her service in the U.S. Army, Mona Pillsbury worked as a graphic and technical artist. She worked in the Publications Department for Douglas Aircraft, Hughes Aircraft, Litton Industries and Geodynamics. Returning to Vermont in 1985, she worked as receptionist, then Assistant to Site Director of Springfield College, School of Human Services in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. She retired in 1998.
