Historical Significance

Lynn Heglund was the fourth Executive Director of the Governor's Commission on Women. She was also an active participant in the movement to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in Vermont.

Lynn Heglund was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and was raised in Minnetonka, Minnesota. She received a B.A. in Political Science and Fine Arts from Goddard College in 1975 and did graduate and paralegal training at Woodbury Associates in Montpelier. She then earned her Masters in Public Administration at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Heglund was the Executive Director at the American Civil Liberties Union of Vermont from 1976-1979 and spent a year as the Civil Rights Specialist at the Office of the Attorney General in Vermont. From 1982 to 1984, she was a development consultant and writer in residence at the Colony House and Dorset Theater in Dorset, Vermont. In 1984 she was appointed as the Executive Director of the newly named Governor's Commission on Women, where she actively sought the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. Heglund resigned from this position in 1989.
