Historical Significance

Patricia Anne Celly Dougal participated in a Navy scholarship program that paid for the last two years of a four year nursing program in exchange for a three year commitment. She enlisted in the Navy in 1966 and received her nursing degree in 1968. Her basic training was at the Women's Officers School in Newport, R.I.

She was deployed from:

1968 at the Naval Hospital, Bethesda, MD; 1969-1970: USS Repose (AH-16), South China Sea (Vietnam); 1970: Naval Hospital, Yokosuka, Japan; 1970-1975: Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, IL; 1975-1978: Naval Hospital, Jacksonville, FL.; 1978: Human Resource Management School, Millington, TN; 1978-1981: Officer Indoctrination School, Newport, RI; 1981-1984: Naval Hospital, Camp Lejeune, NC; 1984-1986: Naval Hospital, Bremerton, WA.

Dougal started out as a staff nurse in clinical areas (medical/surgical ward, Pediatrics, OB/Gyn, orthopedics). She was promoted to charge nurse, area supervisor, and shift supervisor. She served in various non-patient positions such as Q.A. and Infection Control officer. When she was at Hospital Corps School, she was an instructor of nursing procedures. When at Officer Indoctrination School, she was an instructor of many courses geared to orienting new officers to Navy history, customs and courtesies, drill marching, administrative procedures and military law.

Dougal was married in the early 1980's, and retired from the Navy in 1986 after 20 years of service.
