Historical Significance

Alma Gibbs Donchian was an energetic and accomplished sixth-generation Vermonter. The oldest of six children, she grew up on a farm in Castleton, Vermont. As a girl and young woman, she collected antiques, sold flowers to tourists, and rented rooms to visitors. She received her education at what is now known as Castleton State College, graduating in 1927, and went on to become an accomplished teacher in Hartsdale, New York. She returned to Vermont regularly in the summer months. Upon her death, the Alma Gibbs Donchian Foundation was set up in her name, contributing to educational programs, services for the elderly, and organizations committed to traditional values.
