Historical Significance

Catherine Collins was raised in a boarding house for University of Vermont dairy employees run by her parents. She eventually met her husband there. Later she started her own boarding house in Burlington, Vermont, which she ran for over forty years. In 1958, she was a finalist in the Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest, and won a stove, awarded to her by Ronald Reagan, who was then a spokesperson for General Electric. Collins combined her business skills and her "homemaking" skills to run a successful boarding house for nearly half a century.
