Liz Bankowski managed Madeleine Kunin's successful campaign for Governor in 1984. She was one of the first women in the country to manage a statewide campaign. She served as Chief of Staff, holding the Vermont constitutional office of Secretary of Civil & Military Affairs. In 1991, after leaving state government she was elected to the board of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc. She was one of a small number of women serving on the board of a U.S. public company. She was a member of both the board and senior management leading Ben & Jerry's programs in corporate social responsibility. In 1992 she served as Deputy Director in the Economic Cluster for the transition of President-elect Bill Clinton.

First woman born in Vermont to become a lawyer. Had to take her battle to the United States Supreme Court, but the original ruling against her was upheld. Finally admitted to the Illinois State Bar in 1890. Founder of the Chicago Legal News, the first paper in Illinois devoted solely to legal news.

Extensive collection of diaries, letters, postcards and photographs is located at the Vermont Historical Society.

De Ramezay, Louise

Notable Facts

Louise de Ramezay was a seigneur, entrepreneur, and property owner in early New France. She was born into a powerful noble family in Montreal. After her father's death, she gradually took over her family's property holding and managed the Quebec sawmill her father built. Later, she opened and managed two more sawmills, and operated a tannery. In 1749, she was granted the seigneury of Ramezay-la-Gesse on the western shore of Lake Champlain. Even after most French nobles returned to France in 1760, Louise de Ramezay spent the rest of her life in Quebec.
