Historical Significance

Betty Ann Gaudreau Maher Anderson served in the U.S. Navy from February 9, 1960 to May 28, 1963. She was trained at the U.S. Naval Base, Bainbridge, MD, where she was a Drill Team leader. After boot camp, she attended and graduated from Radioman "A" School in Bainbridge, MD. She subsequently was stationed at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Brunswick, ME. She was assigned as a teletype operator in the "Radio Shack", communicating with Naval forces, especially the P2V planes patrolling off the Atlantic coast. She was then assigned to duty as a cryptographer for the Naval Air Station. Anderson recalls a "memorable experience as cryptographer was the heartbreaking communications with those involved in searching for the sub USS Thresher when it went down off the Atlantic coast." The USS Thresher was a nuclear-powered attack submarine. In 1963, it sank off the coast of Cape Cod: there were no survivors.

Anderson attained the rank of Radioman 3rd class, and received a reward for good conduct. While serving in the Navy at Brunswick, she met and married her first husband, Tim Maher. Once she was pregnant with her first child, she had to leave the Navy because women could not have children and still be in service. She was honorably discharged.

Anderson had a number of jobs after her naval service, including: Typographer for Standard Register business forms company, Secretary for Bristol Vermont School District, Owner of Sewing Circle fabric store, Interior Decorator/Administration Assistant for Middlebury College, and consultant for Knits & Bolts Quilt & Yarn Shop. She is a widow with three adult children.
