Historical Significance

Mary Brownson married Ethan Allen in 1762. Together, they had five children: Lorraine (1762-1783), Joseph (1765-1777), Lucy Caroline (1768-1842), Mary Ann (1772-1790) and Pamela (1779-1809). Mary Allen was several years older than her husband, and their marriage was not particularly happy. According to tradition, Allen was illiterate, deeply religious, and shrewish.

Allen died of consumption in 1783 in Sunderland, Vermont.
