You can now ask reference questions online! We hope you like this method of submitting your questions to the Leahy Library staff at the Vermont History Center in Barre, Vermont. Please note that the VHS does not have the state's vital records or newspapers. Please do not request birth, death, marriage records or obituaries with these forms. See our Genealogy Research Resources page for more information on obtaining vital records.
Please click on a link below to access a form for inputting your inquiry and for submitting payment for this service. Payment with a reference request does not gurantee results.
- Quick Reference Request. This option is for asking simple, "ready reference" questions that will involve a minimal amount of research. Example: "When did Vermont become an independent state?" Free.
- Research Request. Use this form for making a more substantial reference inquiry that will require our staff and volunteers to use printed, archival, and online sources. Example: "Who did John Smith marry and when?" Minimum charge $15/half hour for members, $20/half hour for non-members.
- Photocopy Order. If you know what you want copied, use this form to place your order. Digital copies: minimum charge $10 for members, $15 for non-members; hard copies: minimum charge $12 for members, $17 for non-members.
- Payment Form. Use this form to make payments to the VHS library for services rendered. You will need a verbal or written invoice from us before using this feature.
You can reach us at library@vermonthistory.org or at (802) 479-8509. We are open Tuesday through Friday, 9-4; Wednesdays 9-8; and the second Saturday of each month, 9-4.
