A trip to "Freedom and Unity: One Ideal, Many Stories" is an engaging and rich supplement to your social studies curriculum on Vermont history. Children's educational groups are free! The VHS offers many different field trip experiences and will customize Museum tours to fit your lesson plans.

The Museum can work with teachers to create special programs, like this live exhibition to demonstrate how shoes were made in Vermont during the nineteenth century.
 

 

Freedom & Unity Exhibit Overview

In the "Freedom and Unity" exhibit, students will walk through time, exploring settings such as:

  • an Abenaki dwelling
  • the Catamount Tavern
  • a shoemaker's shop
  • a general store
  • a World War II era living room
  • a railroad station
  • a tourist cabin
  • a creamery

Other topics presented include Vermont's role in the Civil War, use of the land, and how public issues are debated.
