Research Resources Online

The Vermont Historical Society's Leahy Library is rich in research resources.  See the library resources section of this website for an overview of our on-site holdings.  This section of the web site contains research resources that you can access through your computer.

Among the resources at the library are many boxes of manuscripts: letters, diaries, account books, business records, and personal papers. These collections document many facets of life in Vermont. Most of the manuscript collections at the Society are not cataloged but some can be accessed through this web site.

There are several ways to explore our cataloged manuscript collections.

  • Browse an index to VHS library's recently processed manuscript collections

  • Look at an index to Civil War manuscripts

  • Read the full text of transcriptions of some of the Civil diaries and letters in our collections

  • Search full text finding aids through the "search" box at the bottom of this and other pages in this site

  • Use our online catalog for extensive search options

  • Use ArcCat, a library-style catalog of manuscript and archival collections at Vermont repositories, including the VHS.

These online catalogs and electronic finding aids contain information on just a small fraction of the collections in the VHS's Leahy Library. To find out more about manuscripts at the VHS contact us via phone or mail, e-mail the library at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , or visit the library in Barre.
