The Johnson Historical Society was established in November 2006. The society plans to provide education about Johnson's history through exhibits, programs, and access to its collections. The society is located on the first floor of the historic Masonic Temple in the center of Johnson Village.

The Noyes House, a two story federal style brick mansion built by the Safford family in the early 19th century, was the first location to be settled in the village of Morrisville. Exhibits of local and regional history, photographs, furnishings, toys, household and farm tools, quilts, costumes, military artifacts, souvenir pitchers, Toby mugs, and other artifacts related to industry, home life, and leisure activities in the 19th and 20th centuries can be viewed throughout 17 rooms and a carriage barn. Research archives and an extensive photograph collection are available for public viewing. Activities include guided tours, historical programs, special exhibits, and an annual open house featuring the Morrisville Military Band.
Hours and Admission: Admission by donation only. Access for the disabled is limited to the main floor of the house and carriage barn.

Back in the mid-to-late 1800's, Stowe was blessed with 19 different schools including the Village School and 18 other "neighborhood" or District Schools, as they were called. Built in 1878, the West Branch Schoolhouse was located at the corner of Luce Hill Road and Mountain Road. To the right are rare photos from the SHS collection of this school and some of its classes.
Upon completion of the new Elementary School in 1953-4, the remaining open district schools closed and from that point until 2006, the West Branch School was home to St. John's in the Mountains Episcopal Church.
Today, the building has been relocated to 90 School Street and restored to be the new home to the Stowe Historical Society and Museum. The Society was formerly housed, since it charter in 1956, in the Akeley Memorial Building. The new headquarters and museum will be open to the public later in the summer of 2011.
Hours and Admission: Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 2:00 - 5:00 pm, Saturdays from 12:00 - 3:00 pm during July, August and September, or any time you see the flag flying on the front porch. Free.
