When the New Hampshire governor started the first town in Vermont, he named it after himself.  Benning Wentworth called the town Bennington!doolittle1795mapsm

Many Vermont settlers came from Connecticut or Massachusetts.  Sometimes they named their new towns after the places they used to live.

For example, New Haven was named after New Haven, Connecticut.  And Salisbury was named after Salisbury, Connecticut.  Guess what the town in the middle was called?  Middlebury!

Look at this list of Vermont towns named after towns in Connecticut or Massachusetts.
