Teaching with the Documents
Make the documents accessible
Some of the documents included in this packet may be difficult for your students to read. You may want to begin by reading the documents out loud, stopping to discuss confusing vocabulary and issues as you go along.
Use the information provided
Background information and a series of questions accompanies each document or group of documents. You might divide the documents among small groups of students. Have the students first read the information about their document and the accompanying questions. This will help them understand what to look for in each document. Groups may then report to the class on on what they've learned.
Create a worksheet
Another approach might be to give each group a worksheet with the following questions: What is this document? When was it written? What is its purpose? Who wrote it? List three things the document tells you. What does this document say about the underground railroad?
