Spotlight on Vermont History

Offered the second WEDNESDAY and the second THURSDAY of each month, September 2018 through May 2019, 1:00 to 3:00 pm

Eight programs will take place at the Vermont History Museum, 109 State Street, Montpelier (directions). January's class will take place at the Vermont History Center in Barre.

Cost is $8 per child per class. Families with three or more children participating in a class or for members of the Vermont Historical Society, cost is $6.50 per child per class. Parents and non-participating children are free.

Recommended for children ages 7 to 12. Some activities include reading and writing. Pre-registration is REQUIRED; space is limited.

Use the online registration site to register and pay by credit card. Or contact Victoria Hughes at education@vermonthistory.org or (802) 828-1413. Or download a registration form (pdf). Registrations will be processed in the order in which they are received starting on Monday, August 13.

Each session includes history-related activities that focus on the month's theme.

Spotlight on Vermont's Environment

Explore how Vermonters have used environmental resources and changed the landscape throughout history.

October 10 & 11, 2018 – 1:00 - 3:00 pm (Wednesday and Thursday classes are full)
Spotlight on Vermont Architecture

Take a walking tour of Montpelier to see how architectural styles have changed over time and understand why buildings look the way they do.

November 14 & 8, 2018 – 1:00 - 3:00 pm
Spotlight on Vermont Towns
(note the classes are in different weeks this month)

Investigate the history and economy of Vermont's towns, with a special focus on Brattleboro.

Explore the significance of agriculture on Vermont's image and history, with a special focus on the Seeds of Renewal exhibit.

Meet at the Vermont History Center in Barre for a special visit to the Vermont Historical Society archives and collections. See how and where we store the documents and artifacts we use in the classes.

Spotlight on Vermont Stories

Explore stories from Vermont, including Abenaki stories, to learn more about the people who have lived on land that is now called Vermont.

Spotlight on Vermont Rocks

Vermont has three official state rocks. Learn about granite, marble and slate and the importance of these rocks in Vermont history.

Learn about Calvin Coolidge and Chester A. Arthur, the two Vermonters who became President of the United States.
