Vermont Civil War sesquicentennial

houghtonImageTo commemorate the beginning of the Civil War Sesquicentennial, Vermont’s many historic and community groups are hosting events around the state. These events will help share the stories of the many Vermont lives that were affected by the war: Vermonters who assisted former slaves; factory and mill workers that helped supply the North with needed arms, blankets and clothing; girls and women who volunteered in aid societies; citizens who defended Vermont in the northern-most land action of the war; and Vermont regiments who fulfilled the state’s pledge to serve “full duty” and distinguished themselves on multiple battlefronts.

For more information on other Vermont Civil War Sesquicentennial events, please visit VermontCivilWar150.com.

Celebrating the anniversary of your town's charter?

During the next four years, many Vermont towns will observe the 250th Anniversary of the charters issued by Benning Wentworth. Between 1749 and 1764, Benning Wentworth, the First Royal Governor of New Hampshire, issued 129 township charters in present-day Vermont.

The Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing, the Vermont League of Cities and Towns, the Vermont Historical Society, the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation and other partners want to assure that your town will have a memorable and meaningful celebration. Town clerks, local historical societies, libraries, schools and civic organizations can join together for an exciting and enjoyable celebration. To see the toolkit that has been designed to offers ideas and assistance in creating a commemoration that will be a success, please click here.

Librarians—we offer your community members a family pass to the museum!

If you'd like to offer your library patrons a free family pass to the Vermont History Museum, here's your chance!MuseumPass

All Vermont public libraries can sign up for a family pass which patrons can "check out" the same way they would check out a book, CD or other item from your library. We are excited to give our museum experience to visitors from your community! To receive your pass, please contact Julie Nelson, julie.nelson@vermonthistory.org or (802) 479-8519.
