Scope and Content

This collection contains the papers of the Hughes Granite and Quarry Company, established in Clyde, Ohio, in 1907. In 1920 the business opened offices in Montpelier, Vermont, and a took over a quarry in the village of Adamant, Calais, Vermont, formerly known as the Whittier Quarry Company owned by Charles Whittier. In 1924 the Hughes Company was succeeded by the Adamant Quarry Company owned by the former stockholders of Hughes, including C. S. Whittier. The collection occupies 2.5 inches of shelf space. It was donated to the VHS by Ellen C. Hill in 1993 (ms. acc. no. 93.5).

The collection contains an idiosyncratic selection of documents related to a quarrying business. There are records related to the incorporation of the company and issuance of stock, but there is very little about the day-to-day operation of the quarry. Folders 8-10 contains a few documents related to operations. There are four folders of material related to an attempt by the company in 1921 and 1922 to build a railroad from the quarry in Adamant to the Boston & Maine Railroad line in East Montpelier. This material includes options to buy rights-of-way and surveys of the route for the railroad.

The collection also contains a few documents on the purchase of the Logan and Judge Quarry in Milford, Massachusetts, from the bankrupt Webb Pink Granite Company, and a subsequent attempt to resell the quarry to Wenz Co., Inc., of Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The collection includes one document from the Whittier Quarry Company: a list of granite shipped from 1916-1920. A document in Folder 10 states that Hughes succeeded Whittier.

There are also a few documents from the Adamant Quarry Company in the collection, the most substantive of which are Articles of Association dated 1924 and a contract with the Quarryworkers International Union.
