You can provide a lasting foundation for Vermont’s history

Barre, Vt. ― Everyone is invited to provide a lasting foundation for preserving Vermont’s heritage by purchasing a brick for placement in the courtyard at the Vermont History Center in Barre. By purchasing a block of masonry, your name (or names of your family members) could be engraved to help maintain this historic Barre landmark.

Folklorist Jane Beck retells powerful stories of Daisy Turner and the African American experience in Vermont

Barre, Vt. ― The life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were honored at the Vermont History Center in Barre on January 21, 2013. Acclaimed folklorist and commentator Dr. Jane Beck recounted the stories of Daisy Turner of Grafton, who was herself the child of former slaves. This story spans two centuries of American history, from Africa into slavery and back to freedom, and is based on research for a new book about the Turner family.

Williamstown book-signing is included in Montpelier’s Art Walk

Montpelier, Vt. ― The Vermont Historical Society invites the public to talk with Doreen Chambers, author of the new book Williamstown during the Art Walk on Friday, December 7, 2012. This local author has transformed dusty albums and artifacts into a meaningful walk down memory lane in this historic community. This softcover publication is part of the Images of America series published by Arcadia. The book signing will take place at 109 State Street at the Vermont History Museum in Montpelier from 3:30 to 5:30 pm.

Vermont Historical Society receives two national awards

Photo Caption: Vermont Historical Society executive director, Mark Hudson, accepted two Leadership in History awards from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH). Only 59 awards were conferred nationwide. The Vermont Historical Society won an Award of Merit for A Very Fine Appearance: The Vermont Civil War Photographs of George Houghton, a Vermont Historical Society publication by Donald Wickman and the second Award of Merit for the Vermont History Explorer website (a vital research tool for teachers and students at www.vermonthistory.org/explorer).

Service & Sacrifice: Powerful exhibit opens on Veterans’ Day

Barre, Vt. ― The Vermont Historical Society announces the opening of the third exhibit at the Vermont Heritage Galleries: Service & Sacrifice: Vermont’s Civil War Generation. The opening will take place on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 60 Washington Street in Barre from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

A Vermont Humanities Council program hosted by the Vermont Historical Society will feature Our Faded and Torn Banners by historian and author Donald H. Wickman along with traditional music by Pete Sutherland and a special color guard presentation by living historians The Vermont Civil War Hemlocks.
