The Abolitionists: Panelists discuss abolishing slavery in Vermont!
Dateline: January 22, 2013
Barre, Vt. ― On Tuesday, February 5 at 7:00 pm at the Vermont History Center in Barre at 60 Washington Street, the Vermont Historical Society screened excerpts from the PBS miniseries “The Abolitionists.” This overview of the national abolitionist movement before the Civil War highlights the lives of five major historical figures (Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, John Brown, Angelina Grimke, and Harriet Beecher Stowe).
After the screening, historians Jane Williamson, Ray Zirblis, and Marilyn Blackwell conducted a lively panel discussion about the abolition movement in Vermont, placing our state in a national context during some of the most violent and contentious decades in American history.
“It is important for us to examine the role Vermonters played in this consequential national movement,” said Vermont Historical Society’s executive director Mark Hudson.
